What is nothing?

So the title, it’s tough to answer right? I am stumped.

When I was in 9th grade physical science class my instructor, who was also the chemistry and physics teacher at the school, told us, that he “will teach us how to think with a scientific mind.” After making his statement the teacher began his first scientific mind lesson. (I wish I could recall this teachers name, but for the life of me I can’t (let me get like one more cup of coffee processed, caffeine helps me think)) The teacher pointed at a seemingly empty flask and asked us what was in it. Of course most of us shouted out nothing. One pupil raised his hand and when called on let the instructor know that the flask was full of air. The teacher gave him a thumbs up and went on to explain how to “think like a scientist”.  As I am typing now the way the teacher did this seems pedantic, however at the time I was all of 14 years old and sometimes pedantic is what is needed for an adolescent who knows everything. Despite being pedantic what the teacher said and did left quite an impression on me. I realized that day that there is no such thing as nothing.

There can be an absence of some type of substance but there is never nothing. I can’t help but think that by realizing that there is no such thing as nothing has helped keep me optimistic when times can seem bleak and dark.  When you realize that nothing doesn’t exist you can find opportunity where others see loss. Hope is a quintessential human emotion that drives men and women to do basically everything. Hope can sometimes seem under attack by attitudes that are disguised as pragmatic but are really pessimistic. remembering that you have nothing to lose because there is no such thing as nothing can sometimes help you find the hope that is lost. At least it does for me
