What are you reading?

I was in middle school when my moms step father died. He struggled with emphysema and when grandma had her stroke and died, it just really seems like he gave up. I always say he died more of a broken heart than the lung problems, he acquired from years of cigarette smoking. Very important lesson here is do not smoke kids.

I can remember some things about moms step dad, he was in the air force and flew planes and he liked to read. Every time I would see him he would ask what book I was reading, grandma was also an advocate for reading and would never miss a oppurtunity to buy and give me a book to read. They say that you will find yourself “turning into your parents as you get older I am not sure how true this is but I have noticed that I always ask my kids about what book they are reading and when I see books I think will interest them I do not hesitate to pick them up and bring them to them.

When I was younger I used to watch some fair amount of TV, much to the chagrin of my mother. On television I remember a set of commercials that had the theme “reading is fundamental” at the end of the statement I also remember a lot of PBS programs developed and based on reading.  I believe these programs and commercials are all part of a national outreach program for the youth to encourage reading

Reading is fundamental and important in the development of an individual. It is important we cultivate this in our youth and it is as easy as asking “what are you reading?’. I challenge all of us to make an impact in the next generation. I mean why not? It’s as simple as asking one question.
