“Of course because you have earned it”

Yesterday while walking across the street with two work colleagues, we were involved not only In a car dodging ballet where I lives hang in the balance, but also a conversation about the book “Sway” . The discussion focused on the part of the book in which it’s authors describe a process basis, which drives most of us away from rational thought called the value bias.
The study to prove this bias existence was done at a school in the Midwest. Results from the study said:”That students who paid for the theater experience enjoyed the experience more than those who were given tickets, therefore most people assign value to things in an irrational way.” As soon as I made this comment one of the intrepid ballet dancers who had just survived our highway crossing made a profound statement. “Of course, it is always better when you have earned something.” What this young woman said really got me to thinking. I began to think about all the gifts I have received as well as the rewards I had earned. I tried to recall which was sweeter the apple given to me by my father or the grapes picked from the vine me and my father had planted. The grape may not have been better tasting but (talk about comparing apples to oranges?) the act of eating the grape involved a short jog down memory lane which, I took with the one bite(grapes are way smaller than apples). After thinking about my own life I thought about suffrage. I thought about the woman’s plight world wide for equality (yes I know that’s what suffrage is) and how maybe all the rights earned by the few for the many, and the weight as well as importance of the cost for this freedom.
I am sure though, with education, that the gravity of suffrage will never be lost. If we teach our daughters about heroes like Susan B. Anthony they can employ some sort of empathy and the value of equality will be like a sweet grape.

“I think the girl who is able to earn her own living and pay her own way should be as happy as anybody on earth. The sense of independence and security is very sweet”
