Archive for October, 2012

Ok Ok two huge sets of shoes to fill I know.. I know but allow me to take this time to explain myself. I will start at the beginning of November 2011. I read about this most excellent program and of course registered immediately.  The program is National Novel writing month, the month is November and in case you haven’t guessed the goal is to write a novel in a month.

An average novel contains 50,000 words in it and that is the measure of a novel for this program. Well I fell short by 12,00o words last November and if you own a calendar you know that November is knocking on the door. Well I am not one to give up so I am trying again.

I was trying to figure out why I failed last year, I mean besides the obvious lack of words, and I think much of my problems came for starting on a story that did not have an ending. My story last year had a beginning and a middle but I wasn’t sure how I should end it. Well last night I found myself struggling for sleep and came up with a story. The artistic part of me wants to say that I dreamed it but I am not sure for me the line between imagination and dream after 2 am is quite blurred, but as soon as I realized that I had a complete story for a novel I found my I pad and got to work with some book notes(is this cheating for the contest? I don’t think so these are merely notes so that I do not forget not words that will be counted for the contest).

So why do I feel a little like Alexander and a tiny bit like Hemingway? Well it is rumored that Alexander Graham Bell, one of the most famous inventors ever, slept with a notebook near his bed and when inspiration struck he would write down said inspiration. Now an I pad is not a notebook but pretty close.  So that is the Alex part and Hemingway yeah it’s a super stretch I mean Hemingway was the man! One of the greatest writers ever. I know I cannot hold a flame to the greats but I becoming with every keystroke on the word processor more and more a fan of writing. Am I any good??? Well you be the judge this year I plan on keeping a blog updated with my daily writing for my novel http://john3corriganbook.wordpress.com/. Now be warned to get at least 50000 words in the month of November I will need to write an average of 2000 words per day. This blog post is only 443 words so far and you are bored to death, also I will not have any words here http://john3corriganbook.wordpress.com/ until November 2nd but definitely book mark it and allow me to bore you to the brink and back.

P.S.

Happy Halloween

It was a Sunday afternoon and I was at the house watching an American Football game on television while my girl friend was reading her book. She reads while I watch and every once in a while her gaze will change from her book to the television it was during one of these moments when she poised the question which is the title of this post. The NFL has gone pink to promote breast cancer awareness.

The American football players have donned pink hats and shoes and towels in an effort to make breast cancer a topic of discussion for men and women nationwide. The term used by commentators and coaches is “increase awareness”.  To be aware of a subject is very important. With early detection the chances for surviving breast cancer are much better.  With awareness men may remind women to look for breast cancer signals, with awareness someone may decide to donate to a breast cancer, charity funding, treatment and research which could cure someone.

Being aware of a subject is important, it is important enough to make some of the biggest and toughest men in sports wear pink. There was an actor named Carroll O’Connor his son committed suicide and I remember my mom and dad saying that the father and actor wished he was more aware of the crowd his son was with and that all parents should be aware of their children’s friends.  Carroll O’Connor worked for a drug free America and is quoted as saying “Get between your kid and drugs any way you can.” Being aware is important always.  p.s. if you can help in any way you can please do http://ww5.komen.org/

Scotland a proud beautiful land with people just as beautiful yet not truly a free land may finally gain the independence so vehemently fought for by the likes of many brave men like Willam Wallace.  That’s right it has been some 700 years since Willam Wallace meet his demise fighting for his homeland’s freedom from the British and the land is not free from British rule. Granted the oppressive British government is less oppressive now than in the days of Willam Wallace. The lack of oppression may also be reason for the results from a survey done by and TNS-BMRB showed that only 28% of Scots favor leaving the United Kingdom.

The referendum will be on the ballot and allow for a straight up vote in 2014 to decide if Scotland will gain the independence many have fought and died for.

Freedom is a funny thing that can be quite subjective. Willam Wallace fought for freedom only after loosing his family.

I think freedoms subjectivity is best described by Voltaire —  “Man is free at the moment he wishes to be.

So the question remains today are you free and if so what are you doing with the freedom you have

The devastation from hurricane Katrina in throughout the state of Louisiana is still being felt some 7 years after the hurricane hit land fall and broke records for destruction and mayhem. Lives were lost, property destroyed families uprooted through a massive evacuation. It seems hard to look for a silver lining in such a tragic and sudden event, it also seems like an effort to trivialize something monumental. Let be be clear this post is in no way an effort to ease anyone’s pain or down play the tremendous loss suffered from this natural disaster. This is an effort to answer both a child and adult question about the natural occurring phenom called hurricanes. Why?

Sometimes to understand and answer why we have to look at the what and how. What besides destruction does a hurricane bring?  Well it brings to the tropics a hospitable climate in which life can survive and thrive. The Earths delicate eco system is the only one we know of so far in the universe which will allow human life. To keep a balance hurricanes play an important part in this.  They are formed from warm ocean air rising from the water’s surface lower pressure air rises and swirls through the higher air pressure.

We now know why hurricanes happen and how they happen and a new question from billionaire, entrepreneur and philanthropist, Bill Gates,  has been brought to the table. If we could should we prevent hurricanes from happening?  It seems mr. Gates has a theory about cooling the warm water and preventing hurricanes. I am not sure if the technology will work, but one has to wonder if the eco system is employing hurricanes to keep the balance what will it resort to when the hurricanes are prevented?

Disaster strikes for various reasons, some disasters are avoidable others are not understanding a disaster can sometimes help with the fall out from it but the fact remains that more often than not loss and disaster are a major part of life. Why does disaster strike? Well it depends on what it is and when it happens.  My wish is not that we avoid all disasters because that would be avoiding life but in the midst of and through the disaster we find strength and courage.

ImageSo the workplace, being an environment full of adults from various background and upbringing, can become a perfect place for disagreements about principles and beliefs which are usually accepted as truth. Recently the new disagreement at work is the existence of bias. An individual at work, who aways seems to wear clothes that look as tough they belong inside ad on te cover of a fashion magazine, let m and another co-worker know that his choices in attire hd nothing to d with anyone other than himself. I let him know that he as incorrect. We all have some bias developed over time.

To stand and say that we are unbiased sounds great, but it is a fallacy. There are and always will be some bias let’s not hide our heads in the sand but instead acknowledge, understand and judge the basis of our bias. Until we do this we cannot expect to grow.

She is frustrated with work, life, family, pretty much everything. She drives to the bus station puts down her life savings at the window and tells the salt and peppered hair gentleman she wants a one way ticket to somewhere good. This is a scenario played out in the minds of people everyday all day. Growing up is understanding that we play a major role on how “good” or “bad” the place we live in is and that we can travel to the ends of the world and because we will always be stuck with us, we may never find some where good.

Being an adult means we understand and reinforce this everyday with every decision we make. So today let’s do our best by making good decisions in trun making where we live good, even if it is just in our little corner of the world.

Saturday afternoon six kids and the threat of boredom creeping in, propelled us to take to the road. In about 14 minutes we were pulling up to Fort Morris in Midway GA. Fort Morris is a historical site in Midway GA. The Fort Morris historic site is where a military post of 200 patriots stood to protect coastal GA from the British troops. We pay the park ranger in the gift shop, he then directs us to a small movie theater where the kids take their seats and we see a film about Sunbury GA and it’s importance in 1700’s to the continental U.S. As we listen and see how important and big the old sea port city once was we hear the kids pipe up with a, “I am learning about this or that in school” and the “oh I know who that is'”

I am pleased that the boredom killer is working, so far and that maybe they are learning something. I am also in shock to hear about the size of Sunbury GA. The port city, as I mentioned earlier was one of the larger cities in GA and worth protecting. The reason I find this hard to believe is the lack of physical evidence in the city for a town of any substantial size let alone bustling. Sunbury is an empty deserted marsh part of Liberty County GA. Even the historic site, Fort Morris has no man-made structures left from the time it was a fort.

Nature has come behind man and now stand where there were once houses, Live oak trees with spanish moss. Where once you could hear the clip clop of horses and the hum of machinery you hear the abundant cacophony of a myriad of birds and wildlife. The location of the fort has a mile long nature trail that we follow and as we do we read the narrative that tells the history of a hard-fought battle. The kids are rescued from the brink of boredom and I am once again amazed at the power of mother nature and the beauty of it all.
