The election is almost here in the United states of America. Thousands of people will go out to vote and that is important democracy is one of the foundation blocks of the great country that is the United States of America. People vote for many different reasons, some vote because they feel it is their civic responsibility, some because they want things to stay the same and others vote because they would like to see some changes, but one thing that seems to be a common thread among all voters is the feeling that their ballet is something big. That the vote is their chance to be part of something bigger than themselves.
There are approximately (it is not an exact science) seven billion people in the world today.  So it can be easy to feel like just a number, and an insignificant number at that. Most religious organizations call this feeling, a spiritual void that can only be filled by their god. Mark Twain gave some advice as well about how to deal with this feeling. “The best way to cheer yourself is to try to cheer someone else up.”  — Mark Twain

In the United States most recently along with the election there was a horrific storm that destroyed neighborhoods and lives in the northeast part of the country.  The storms name was hurricane Sandy. The country stopped and came together with the help of organizations like the Red Cross and the United way. People all over the country as far away as California and as close as New York state donated money to the Red Cross at the grocery store, church pretty much anywhere groups gathered, money was donated collected and put into action. The donations feed and are feeding the hungry, sheltering the homeless, restoring the powerless, basically your donations are helping set things right. Every major religion that promises to fill the void asks of its memebers to be charitable and compassionate and to take charitable and compassionate actions. I can’t help but think that this “call to arms”  is the best and most important way to “do something big”.

Voting is important and should be done in a democracy but even more important than participating in the democratic process and right of voting would be participation in the human process of being charitable. If you want to do something big give of yourself to others. If you don’t have money don’t worry people need more than money. Volunteer your time and talents. It will make a difference in others and your own life, that difference will be more rewarding and more powerful than anything else. to include voting.
