Happy Halloween

Tonight all over The United States neighborhoods will be invaded by ghouls, goblins, fairies, super heroes, queens, kings, vampires, zombies and robots all looking for candy. They will go door to door knocking more than a woman selling some decent perfume cologne and makeup. When you open the door they will shout trick or treat. You may complement them on the costume, feign being frightened by them or if you are super cool you will jump out and scare them, and of course you will hand over candy. It is Halloween, a holiday remembering the dead, and is celebrated by trick or treating. I remember reading about the origins of trick or treating. It is interesting and anecdotal.

It seems to me that Halloween and trick or treating are a societies way of maybe not understanding, but coping with death and loss of loved ones. It is impossible to understand death and despite strides in science, philosophy and religion our society still has little knowledge of death and what comes next.  So let us all dawn our costumes hand out candy and celebrate!!

Happy Halloween!!

I hope everyone has a safe and fun night tonight. Maybe you are handing out candy, taking young ones trick or treating, going to a party or doing all three.

After hard work or a long run. The water tastes so much better. Pushing your mind body and spirit to the limit and accomplishing something makes us feel better about the simple pleasures in life like a glass of water or cold soda. Never miss the opportunity to learn or discover through hard work.

I love to read about WW II. The whole magnitude of the war and it’s impact on the world is truly lost on me. I am most struck by the human condition and the unstoppable will of man. When the animal known as man puts his mind to it he can accomplish anything. You are part of mankind, one of the most powerful forces in the history of time. Remember that when you feel like quitting or giving up.

You may need a new strategy to accomplish whatever it is you are working on but when you do accomplish it, and you will. A glass of water is waiting for you and it will taste better than any other water you have ever had before.

and no for some help at the half way day of the week I give you some great motivational quotes.

”It’s always down to you and the choices you make. Work on the things you can change and never dwell on the things you can’t. You choose… ‘results’ or ‘excuses’ it’s always down to YOU… no one has ever given their BEST and regretted it. GO HARD NO EXCUSES.”

”I’m not telling you it’s going to be easy… I’m telling you it’s going to be worth it.”

“Tears will get you sympathy, sweat will get you results.”

“Dear tomorrow, do whatever you wanna do .. I have already lived my today and I am not afraid of you anymore .”

“I was not delivered into this world in defeat nor does failure flow through my veins. I am not a sheep waiting to be prodded by my shepherd. I am a lion and I refuse to talk, walk, to merge with the sheep. I will not hear those who weep and complain for their thoughts are contagios. Let them join the sheep. The slaughterhouse of failure…Is not my destiny.”

‎”Good things come to those who wait… greater things come to those who are willing to work for it”

Most people give up before they’ve given it their ALL. To accomplish some things you have to push yourself and give it everything you’ve GOT.

He has only meet three

Posted: October 29, 2013 in Uncategorized

I was listening to an interview with Henry Winkler and during the interview Henry Winkler mentioned how he had in his whole life only meet three people who were not people he really liked. I thought about the impact of the stars words. He is an older man and has meet many people. A lot of the people he meet and meets are in the “Hollywood set”, so I can imagine that there is a certain amount of vapid sensibilities that comes with these folks and of all he has only meet three.

I think this number is low and it speaks to the mans positive outlook on life and relationships. I have no doubt that this positive outlook has made this man a treat to be around and helped with his wildly successful career.  We have to work and deal with people on a regular basis and I am pretty sure none of us are the age of Mr. Winkler yet, so wouldn’t you love to say that you have only meet three people you do not like. Do yourself a favor today, and before you began to go down a road of disdain for someone. Empathize not sympathize, no one wants sympathy, but really try and put yourself in that other persons position and  see the situation through their point of view this will help with your attitude and with finding solutions to tough problems

The minute he became a slave

Posted: October 28, 2013 in Uncategorized

Here in the United States of America there was a time when slavery was handled through the sovereignty of the state governments.  So what does that mean? Well slavery was legal and illegal depending on which part of the country you lived in. This was one of those perverse moments in the history of the world were geography determined right or wrong.  There are somethings that are wrong no matter when or where someone is in time or space. Slavery is one of those things.

Slavery is never right. Despite how wrong slavery is it was still legal in some states and illegal in others. Later on in the history of the United States of America, slavery is abolished and no matter where you live it is illegal to sell buy or use slaves.

When slavery was legal in some states and illegal in others there were moments when a black man or woman who was free could be captured and enslaved. There were stories written were this happened. A commentator was speaking about one of the stories and he commented on how strange it was in the book that moment the free man became a slave. He comments on how the minute he became a slave he lost what seems like everything that made him human.

If you have read any of my posts you should have noticed that I am a firm believer in the power of education. I do not believe a man or woman can be totally free and enjoy liberty if they are not educated or if they will not learn.

Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery, none but ourselves can free our minds!
Bob Marley
Bob Marley had it right.

Once we decide to stop learning we in a way make ourselves slaves (let me say that I am in no way trying to simplify the barbaric act of slavery I am merely making an analogy). Our “self enslavement” will happen quickly too.  A lack of knowledge can cause frustration and strained relationships, and well these situations are nowhere near as harmful as slavery they can be “hell”. We should do ourselves a favor and learn as much as we can as often as we can

Know your eggs

Birds are amazing animals. I love hearing them sing seeing them fly. All different colors and breeds. They own the skies and the trees. I am a big fan of the birds almost all the time. I don’t really like it when the poop on my car but I am still a fan. Just amazed by them.

Sometimes I wonder what it would be like to be a bird. I mean I wouldn’t trad places no, but what is that life like? Is it free cutting through the air soaring out there. Then I read something like this article . The article explains in detail the brood parasite birds. To sum it up, a brood parasite bird lays eggs like other birds but she lays the eggs in other birds nests. The brood parasites, baby birds, hatch lings or chicks are a little larger than the nests host family hatch lings or chicks. Because of the size of the brood parasites off spring in comparison to the size of the nest family, the brood parasite baby steals resources and usually kill all the other hatch lings.

So it seems the bird life is not as free as it seems. When it comes to things like raising kids and taking care of the family almost all species experience some type of struggle. My mom used to tell me that the grass always seem greener on the other side of the fence and that I should focus on the tasks in front of me and enjoy the moments in my life and time right now. She was right it can be easy to look at someone else and envy their situation before fully understanding it.

There is nothing wrong with wanting freedom and peace but we have to understand that these states are worked towards and found through employing hard work, like a diligent mother checking or eggs.

Ah the ellipsis it is a small but powerful punctuation point. Three little dots kind of looks like Morse code.  I think it is way more powerful than the exclamation point. The ellipsis leaves so much to the imagination of the reader I love questions and imagination. The ellipsis takes the reader to the door cleans off the welcome mat and lets them turn the know themselves. Look at the post title. Lot of questions there right? I mean Cook who? Then there is the it in the title. What is the word it referring to?  Finally we have the matter of the but. Everyone has a but (ha ha I know horrible joke) what does the but mean? Well you are in luck or not depends on how you feel about reading my posts because we are just getting started… <—(see what I did there?)

Who is Cook? Oh man Captain Cook was one of the coolest sailors on the planet! (yeah the ellipsis is way cooler than that thing) Captain James Cook 1728 and 1729 he sailed and explored for the United Kingdom. He saw action in the Seven Years world, discovered Australia, New Foundland and went around the horn of Africa.

Cook looked for the hidden continent, we call it Antarctica, but never found it it. He was very close the the Antarctic mainland but had to turn back. He knew it was there but he never reached it. Not many possessions of Captains Cooks remain. A pistol once owned by Captain Cook was sold at auction and fetched $227,000.  What does remain of Captain Cook are the stories. Wonderful true stories full of dauntless, adventure and discovery. Stories which should stir the pioneering spirit in the young and old. Stories which in no small way have shaped the globe and have had an incredible impact on the culture of the citizens of Australia.

We may not always find what we are looking for or reach our goals, but we should be thankful because the ellipsis is a very powerful punctuation point. Or is it a series of points?

I can’t remember how old I was when I got it for Christmas but it was a Packard Bell PC.The machine ran DOS and Windows. The Windows program it ran was not an operating system is was just a desktop file system. It was a while ago, but I can still remember how I felt when I got the present (did I mention geek alert?). I thought it was so cool! I would press a button and the machine would make sounds. Images would display on the monitor. I went to the mall and bought some software from a store called Babbages. I installed the software and quickly ran out of space on the PC.

After running out of space I started to delete software from the PC. I would delete one piece of software, reboot see what happened. I learned how to create batch scripts, I learned about operating systems. Sometimes the machine would not run for weeks. Once I broke the machine and my dad had to get a boot disk from someone at work. I even opened the machine up to upgrade the memory.

I learned so much about the machine and the code that made it work by taking apart the code and the machine itself.

Have you ever taken apart a watch? Amazing devices full of gears and springs and metal. Seem impossible to put back together, but nothing is impossible nothing. No I have not put one back together yet.

I have taken apart a lot of things, but when I was in middle school my moms mom bought me a set of illustrated encyclopedias. The books were amazing and had cut away diagrams of everything. A gun firing a bullet, a pc, an ATM machine, a combustible engine. There they were in color page after page. I like to believe these books spared many of the machines in my parents homes from having their warranties voided. Later in life I learned about the Chiltons Automotive manuals and read as many as I could. Every make year and model of car was in those books. You could see wiring schematics and diagrams of all the cars systems they are really amazing books.

I don’t change my own oil today, but I have and know how. I haven’t built a car but I know how one is built and I have watched the assembly line move on YouTube. Everything I like or love I have tried to “take apart” and understand. I believe this understanding helps me cultivate a better relationship with the things and the people I love.

While I cannot take apart people I love and see how they tick. I can listen and watch and learn about them and what they like and I may never figure out what it is that makes them them I really enjoy this “taking apart”. If I could give any advice to any one today it would be this posts title.

If you love it take it apart
