Is fear real

So I watched the movie After Earth, (really good movie) if you are a father or a son you should watch this movie! Great movie. I will not spoil it for you. Will Smith is a really tough space ranger and he is teaching his son. It is one of these teachable moments in which he makes a statement about fear.

“Fear is not real. The only place that fear can exist is in our thoughts of the future. It is a product of our imagination, causing us to fear things that do not at present and may not ever exist. That is near insanity. Do not misunderstand me danger is very real but fear is a choice.”

Pretty cool quote right?  I think so. The movie by the way was excellent. Everyone should watch this movie. So back to fear. Fear is for a human being, is a chain reaction which starts with a stressful stimulus and ends with your heart racing in reaction to chemicals released from your brain.  Here is the link to an amazing how to on fear.

Fear starts at the stimulus, so to avoid fear it is easy avoid the stressful stimulus. Easier said than done right?  We will often find that the situations which create a stressful stimulus in our lives are unavoidable, we will also often realize the stressful stimulus is in fact a lot less stressful than it should be.

Let me explain… You are home alone preparing for bed. It is dark outside you hear the wind in the trees you assume the worst. A burglar or a poltergeist is coming to the house to get you.  You feel your heart racing, your palms get sweaty. Your body is reacting to the stimulus. You go to check on the noise and realize it is the wind.  (Yes I know this is the example from the link. I am using it because I like it)

So is fear real yes, is it however legitimate, I have to say that many times fear is not legitimate, we simply do not understand the situation we are in. I have pointed this out so many times and will continue to point it out. Education understanding and knowledge are key. With the proper education, 90 % of our fears  would never manifest themselves.  So keep learning and fear not.

I started today’s post with a quote and  I think it is only appropriate to end with a quote. The quote comes from one of the best writers of horror stories in the United States

“The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear, and the oldest and strongest kind of fear is fear of the unknown”
― H.P. Lovecraft
