We need each other

“There is no general doctrine which is not capable of eating out our morality if unchecked by the deep-seated habit of direct fellow-feeling with individual fellow-men.” — Quote from Middlemarch. A long book made up of eight books and is said to be be one of the books everyone should read or at least know about.

I don’t know if you have to read it, but I know the book touches on many social subjects that are hotbeds today and will continue to be throughout time. Religion, hypocrisy, political reform,  education and of course love. It is a long read so it approaches each subject at a leisure pace with some very purple writing prose. This blog however is not a book review, so I will digress.

I love this quote from Middlemarch “There is no general doctrine which is not capable of eating out our morality if unchecked by the deep-seated habit of direct fellow-feeling with individual fellow-men.” I think it demonstrates the importance of compassion for our fellow man.

I have seen many people act under the guise of goodness or religion and cause pain to their fellow man. Just last week in my local newspaper I read a religious column, I think it was titled “know when to get tough”. The minister who wrote the column commented on how Christians should know when to be tough. I have seen men and women fight and I am not sure if there are any problems with teaching people to be tough.

When we get “tough” it is easy to become selfish and less introspective. I blogged the other day about Pete Seeger and his legacy. An incredible man! Pete made a comment about man that was great! “Singing together you finally found out there are things that you learn from each other which you wouldn’t learn with arguments and you might not learn from any other way”  (see brilliant man right?)

How much more will we learn today if we try singing together instead of well everything else?
