Do you know why we run in the morning

I was 18 a solider in the army and a little upset about the early morning run I was participating in. I didn’t enjoy waking up early and hitting the pavement for three miles every weekday morning. After we stretched a 22 year old Lieutenant caught up with me and changed the way I saw the morning forever. “Do you know why we run in the morning Corrigan? Not the afternoon” I had no answer. He went on to let me that there was a psychological factor to running in the morning. “You get the toughest part of your day done early in the morning and everything else seems inconsequential.”

I got out of the Army and moved my run to the afternoon but I have ran in 5ks (early morning) and just this morning I did my run early in the morning with my girlfriend and let me say this. I feel great.

I think Mark Twain had it right when he said

“Eat a live frog first thing in the morning and nothing worse will happen to you the rest of the day.”

Here is a quick article in Forbes about the early morning benefits

Among all the benefits in the Forbes article the one that seemed the least likely was that, early risers are more optimistic.  Is there anyone who wouldn’t benefit from more optimism? There is little in life we can do to change our lives but we can exercise some control over our schedules and it seems be happier if we only wake up a little earlier.

I feel this way now about my new routine come see me in a week and I may be singing a different tune.
