Love

Valentines day is over the candy has been eaten the cards all given out and now it is Monday. We wake up shower and push off to work, but Love remains. Why is this? How is this? What makes love so special what makes love more than a card or candy or sweet nothings?

I Corinthians 13:4 -8

4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

8 Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away.

Love is pretty cool huh? The world and mankind can seem harsh, at times but not love. Love is the opposite of harsh it is warm, open non – judgmental. Who do you love? Well let’s see I love my kids, my girlfriend, my family and friends, but what if I loved everyone? How different would my world be? What if I really loved them?  Do I even know how to love like that? Does anyone?

So how do you love like that? Hmm I have some great examples. My dad has never showed any judgement. He raised four kids to adults and I never once noticed him sitting in judgement of anyone else. “Hey, it takes all kinds.” Are words my dad would say when invited by others to be judgmental and participate in  the mob of public opinion either for or against peoples life choices. My mom always had me and my sisters in mind when making life decisions. How can she make sure we are safe and happy? What could she do for us so that we would grow up to be decent adults? These questions guided what seems like all my moms decisions when I was growing up. The non – judgmental sacrificial love that I saw helped me learn to love.  I see this same love in action today by people all over the world, but there are also many examples of a lack of love. A judgmental spirit, more interested in sousing out the “right” people from the “wrong” people.   A spirit of envy which is defined as ambition, pride disguised as self – esteem and finally anger and fear that when manifest leave nothing but death and destruction in its wake. So not everyone is engaging in love, and I can only imagine what the world would be like if everyone where.

Imagine all the people
Living for today…

 Imagine all the people
Living life in peace…

You may say I’m a dreamer
But I’m not the only one
I hope someday you’ll join us
And the world will be as one

No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world…

You may say I’m a dreamer
But I’m not the only one
I hope someday you’ll join us
And the world will live as one

— John Lennon

We know how to love and it isn’t easy but it is possible I know someone know who loves everyone she meets and makes it easy for me to love her, but if we want a world like the one John Lennon sang about if we want a world without war, poverty, disease, and full of life we have to love the ones that make it hard to love.

The candy is eaten the cards opened,  But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away…….

Love never fails.

“Now there is a final reason I think that Jesus says, “Love your enemies.” It is this: that love has within it a redemptive power. And there is a power there that eventually transforms individuals. Just keep being friendly to that person. Just keep loving them, and they can’t stand it too long. Oh, they react in many ways in the beginning. They react with guilt feelings, and sometimes they’ll hate you a little more at that transition period, but just keep loving them. And by the power of your love they will break down under the load. That’s love, you see. It is redemptive, and this is why Jesus says love. There’s something about love that builds up and is creative. There is something about hate that tears down and is destructive. So love your enemies. (from “Loving Your Enemies”)”

Martin Luther King Jr.

 Matthew 5:44

King James Version (KJV)

44 But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;
