The sun and that deck

I can’t remember how old I was or even where I was. I do remember that it was summer, I imagine I was in middle school, and I believe I was at some type of camp. My mom and dad had four kids, of which I am the oldest, and they had us when they were young. So when opportunities like sending us to summer camp came up my parents took them. My sister may have been with me at camp but one summer afternoon I swam in the lake. This was done every summer afternoon, but this time I swam all the way to the floating deck, at what I imagine was the middle of the lack. I pulled my body up onto the deck and laid there in the sun. My muscles were sore and the sun felt great it dried me and relaxed my sore and taunt muscles. That moment in time is what I would call a close to perfect moment. I felt all the therapeutic effects of the sun and exercise, the world slowed down and I felt calm and relaxed and just great.

Life moved on and I grew up. I have felt this way again but it was with someone special. I get that feeling with her in the early morning when the sun is about to rise and I have  cup of coffee and a good book or newspaper to read. I feel relaxed and excited at the same time.

I watched a movie called “Blow“. In the movie Blow Johnny Depp plays a drug dealer, named George Jung. There is a scene where George is describing how  he can calm walk through customs in the airport with drugs hidden in his luggage. He imagines he is somewhere else. Psychologists call this visualization. George describes how he would visualize a beach and him on it listening to the surf and feeling the sun.

When I employed visualization in the past I almost always went back to that deck in the middle of the lake, but lately I find myself drifting to my early mornings.  It is because of this that I count myself to be extremely lucky!

I think one of my most favorite authors put it best when he said:

“You know you’re in love when you can’t fall asleep because reality is finally better than your dreams.”
― Dr. Seuss
