This could be how it ends

Ok so papers are written all the time, by really smart people. Papers about now, the past and the future. One paper  written in 2012 and just recently submitted for peer review in the scientific journal Ecological Economics, points out how mankind will end. It will not be because of lack of natural resources or “rise of the machines” it will more likely be our greed and bigotry.  The paper describes how movies like “Elysium” and “Blade Runner” may have it right for man kinds future.

I read an article about the paper on Cnet this morning and I will admit I scoffed a little. Come on, that is science fiction. Emphasis on fiction. I moved on from the article and began my morning rituals as I was getting ready for work I began to think again about the rise and fall of nations. The Akkadins, Babylonians, Egyptians, Indians, Romans, Ancient Chinese, Greeks. All thes civilizations have risen and fallen and today all over the globe it is hard to see anything but hunger and unrest especailly within the shadow of thes civilizations hay days.   China, India and Egypt have terrible cast systems in place that have cultivated a culture in which children starve and are marginalized at a very high rate. I apologize in advance this post is not meant to be derogatory to any nationality I believe that greed is a human trait that transcends all nationalites and civilizations and because of this I can now see greed at work in the United States of America, a group of people who are arguably the next great civilization in the world. If you argue against this I ask that you look to this countries armed forces power and presence world – wide. John Lennon had it right when he said “Today America is the Roman Empire and New York is Rome itself.”  John Lennon

Every religious text has warnings against greed and commands to respect and have compassion on all living beings and yet it seems we cannot help but violate these commands and employ greed. We hide behind politics and religon while we engage in bigotry, racism, sexism.  The leaders of the world take up and hand down dogma that hurts more than it helps and if anyone disagrees with it they are called heretics or traitors.

There is some hope though an example of this hope can be seen in the actions and words from the new Pontiff. Pope Francis. I am not catholic but I understand how powerful the catholic church is throughout the world and the influence this religion has had and has on the western world so seeing a man like Pope Francis elected to lead this organization is a bright spot.

“Since many of you do not belong to the Catholic Church and others are non-believers, from the bottom of my heart I give this silent blessing to each and every one of you, respecting the conscience of each one of you but knowing that each one of you is a child of God.”

Pope Francis

I think he said everything we need to realize when we feel that evil monster called greed or envy invading our thoughts and actions. We are all here on this earth together and while you may or may not agree with someones religion or politics it is not your place to judge. As long as everyone is helping themselves and others I am convinced that our civilization will endure for a really long time, but when we began to decide which people are deserving and pass judgement we will start the descent. As long as we do no harm and only help we should be alright. A good way to remember this is to remember “that each one of you is a child of God.”
