J. B. S. Haldene was a geneticist and polymath whose, research has made great contributions in genetic science  and medicine. When the cure to cancer, color blindness and any other genetic disorders or diseases are discovered the community that makes this discovery will have to thank J.B.S. Haldene. (Now I know that cancer is not a genetic disorder but, new research from the American Cancer Society has pointed to some evidence that genetics may play a large role in cancer.)  Haldene  was really quite a contributor to society.  When you get the chance, if you already are not familiar with Haldene’s legacy, you should get to know it. He made contributions to science math and the Indian nation. One of my favorite quotes from Haldene is this one :

“I have no doubt that in reality the future will be vastly more surprising than anything I can imagine. Now my own suspicion is that the Universe is not only queerer than we suppose, but queerer than we can suppose.” – J.B.S. Haldene

Possible Worlds and Other Papers (1927), p. 286

I can’t help but think that it was the attitude or perspective displayed in that quote that made Haldene such a huge contributor.  He looked forward to the future and marveled at the present. When I read this quote I am almost always drawn to tie it to one of my most favorite songs. I love listening to music.

I see trees of green,
red roses too.
I see them bloom,
for me and you.
And I think to myself,
what a wonderful world.

I see skies of blue,
And clouds of white.
The bright blessed day,
The dark sacred night.
And I think to myself,
What a wonderful world.

The colors of the rainbow,
So pretty in the sky.
Are also on the faces,
Of people going by,
I see friends shaking hands.
Saying, “How do you do?”
They’re really saying,
“I love you”.

I hear babies cry,
I watch them grow,
They’ll learn much more,
Than I’ll ever know.
And I think to myself,
What a wonderful world.

Yes, I think to myself,
What a wonderful world.

Oh yeah.

louis Armstrong, was an amazing performer who faced skepticism for his lack of confrontation during some pretty rough times (civil rights movement in the United States of America). Armstrong did not speak up or out for civil rights in America until he spoke out against president  Eisenhower. President Eisenhower, he charged, was “two faced,” and had “no guts.” Armstrong made huge contributions to society as well through music and respect for the world and I can’t help but think it was his attitude that made this possible.
He marveled and loved life just like Haldene. Looking at what we have now and having hope for the future this is something we can all draw strength from. I am not sure what it is called but enjoying the moment right now and living in it is so empowering and enables us to hope and see a better future. Never stop learning and marveling at you and your world

“In school they never taught ’bout hamburgers or steak,
Elijah Muhammad or the welfare state.
But I know.
And I know because of KRS-ONE.
Yeah and I know
And I know because of KRS-ONE.

Because he’s droppin’, droppin’, droppin’ science, droppin history
With a whole leap of style and intelligency
Yes, I know.
I know because of KRS-ONE
Yeah, and I know
I know because of KRS-ONE.

Because we don’t want to pay money to hear the same old sounds.
Watch him, he’ll take hip-hop to a higher ground.
And I know
(How do I know?)
And I know because of KRS-ONE.
Yeah, and I know
And I know because of KRS-ONE.

And I know
And I know because of KRS-ONE.
And I know

I was listening to this song the other morning, written and played by one of my most favorite groups of all times Sublime and I realized that I had no idea who KRS One is.

I did some googling, and found some really cool information out about KRS One. We live in an age where the most knowledge in human existence is readily available so to not know usually means you are apathetic or lazy, either way that is no good.

So KRS One is a rapper and activist who speaks out against violence and for unity. He is definitely not a fan of marketing or mass consumerism. In an interview with who-mag.net, KRS-One said he will sue radio stations that play his music. He reasoned “They don’t deserve it. They destroy careers.” and “I existed before them, why would I join them?” On first glance I am beginning to like this guy.  I have been for the longest time, a huge fan of, knowledge freeing all and making anything possible. It seems KRS One agrees and I have nothing against peace and unity either oh yeah did I mention that his music sounds pretty good too? Well it does, if you like rap. After learning about KRS One my Ipod is a little heavier now.

Better change your ways, we coming up on stranger days.

 Krs One quotes

You know the world is a big old rock in space full of amazing, introspective thinkers. If you stop and listen you may learn something and find people who impress on you like KRS One did for the group Sub lime. One of the thinkers who has made a big impression on me has been Noam Chomsky.  Krs One quotes

The intellectual tradition is one of servility to power, and if I didn’t betray it I’d be ashamed of myself.

Who has been this way for you and why?  Why and how do you know?

Michael Faraday is visited by a delegation of government dignitaries. They are shown his electric motors and other demos. One person says “This is all very interesting, but of what possible use are these toys?” Faraday responds: “I cannot say what use they may be, but I can confidently predict that one day you will be able to tax them.”

This scenario has been repeated in various forms. some times in the scenario the person is a woman at other times a fellow scientist. There are no confirmed or documents of the scenario available to the public so, it is assumed that this scenario is less fact and more of urban legend or myth.

What is documented and a fact is that, Michael Faraday did make major contributions to electromagnetism and through his work, made it possible for science to understand how to generate and harness electricity!

That is some  big deal science right? I mean think about all the things done with electricity. It wakes us up in the morning heats cools our house and saves live. Ever hear of an defibrillator.

In the urban legend Faraday didn’t know exactly how but he knew that the electromagnetic  principles he had discovered, were really important. He knew that these toys which demonstrated the principles were full of possibilities.

It is Monday and we will be involved in many mundane events at work. Take note today and everyday when using our mundane toys not to overlook the possibilities that there are or could be.

so be like Faraday on Monday

It is called the left digit effect, it happens every day all over the United States of America. I am not sure but I bet it also happens in other countries too. Do you know what it is? Did you follow the link?  You didn’t did you? You were going to follow the link but, because you have read this blog before realized that I, john3c would briefly describe what the link said and you didn’t need to wast e that time. Well, you were right.

The left digit effect is a name psychologists give to the desirability of a product that has a price which ends in 99 cents over a price ending in 0 cents. The reasoning behind this, lies much in the way a person’s brain is wired. We are wired to not process information well when it is in absolute terms, like exact change and also maybe because we read from left to right. See you see 1.99 as a price and think well it is a good deal a much better deal than 2.00 and the odds of most people purchasing the 1.99 are higher than the 2.00 product. It is crazy but true and it happens almost everytime  you buy anything. Look it up. Follow that link and Google this. I mean it is wild.

How can we break out of this way of processing information and get better at making decisions when it comes to making decisions dealing with precise measurements? Well, try reading backwards.

writeback

One of my most favorite inventors in the history of the world employed mirror writing. Yeah, he was amazing and did so much. I could fill these pages with his accomplishments and he was rumored to have used this writing so others couldn’t read his plans but I mean I would guess he didn’t have a problem thinking precisely. Well maybe he did but isn’t the idea of training our brains to read forward and backwards seem cool?

The thing is to make a change like thinking precisely, you have to well make some changes, right?

It is not true that people stop pursuing dreams because they grow old, they grow old because they stop pursuing dreams.  ~ Gabriel Garcia Marquez ~

Dreams are… this is where most writers would paste a definition from Websters or Wikipedia, but I am not going to insult my one reader that way. You know what dreams are and so do I. We understand that dreams are on the truly specific and scientific level a series of images or hallucinations presented to an individual when in a dream like state IE REM sleep.  Now on a higher level dreams can be looked at as want desires wishes. When Martin Luther King Jr. stood on the Lincoln Memorial and look out over the reflecting pool and give his speech he said “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character. I have a dream today!” He was not really speaking about an image of hallucinations or images strung together. He was speaking about wishes desires and hopes.

If you haven’t read it yet or lately and have time to, you really should read the I have a dream speech. A wonderful speech written by a brilliant man!  I digress dreams are more than images and hallucinations, although they mat start that way they don’t end there.  Joan of Arc the maid of Orleans had dreams. In her dreams she was spoken to by the Arch angel  Michael, Saint Margaret and Saint Catherine. The angels and the saints told the daughter of peasants to support the uncrowned Charles VII in his attempt to liberate France from the English. I have of course another quote from Joan

“I shall last a year, and but little longer: we must think to do good work in that year. Four things are laid upon me: to drive out the English; to bring you to be crowned and annointed at Reims; to rescue the Duke of Orléans from the hands of the English; and to raise the siege of Orléans.”

dreams-mirror

Dreams are  visions hallucinations, hope desires and above all else important. We have to dream and look forward to things.  Dreams are important for inspiration and also acoording to this article I read, important to our psychological well being.  They give us a chance to “download and process. So work hard get some sleep and sweet dreams.

Just the other day I heard an interview on NPR about Encladus.  For anyone who doesn’t know Encladus is a newly discovered moon in the rings of Saturn. The moon is covered in ice, a fact which as any space geek would tell you is not incredible but, Encladus is incredible because it seems like the core of the moon is full of water. Water that is spewing out of a volcano on it’s surface in a plume.

EnceladusCARROLL_f

On the radio show the scientist can hardly contain their glee about this fact. There are plans to somehow get material from the plume so that it can be studied. What will they find? Is there microbial life on Encladus?  One can only wonder and guess now but where there is water there is a possibility for some type of life.

The radio announcer asked one of the astro biologist about the  possibility of life on Encladus. The astro biologist mentioned that the possibility is high because life is more clever and diverse than mankind tends to give it credit for. I listen and let this idea sink in. The notion that life is clever and diverse. I think about just how true this is. Bacteria exists in some of the harshest conditions, more than exists it thrives. Plant animal and humans do the same. They live all over the globe and at this moment some men and women are living in a space station off the globe.

To survive and beyond that to thrive and relish and enjoy our lives we sometimes have to be clever and diverse like life is. We have to embrace changes and  find new ways to help ourselves and others. There are many elements to living a full and rich life and I am certain we will find that discovering and using these elements is going to take a bit of diversity and cleverness on our parts

Back the truck up

Life is full of curve balls and judgement calls.  We have to make decisions, that will sometimes change the course of our life. I am not sure what where or how these decisions should be made. I am sure of right or wrong but usually what makes these decisions troubling is that they are part of the gray area. We are right and wrong with any decision we make, that is what makes these decisions tough.

download (7)

What can one say about making these decisions? They are tough and should not be made lightly or with self deception.  Self deception is actually the act of lying to ones self. We take away rationalization, evidence and logic and replace it with lies.    When we begin to think through and make our decisions we should always employ logic, rational thought, evidence, logic and compassion.

One of the tell tale signs that we may be traveling down a road that leads to self deception is that every scenario played out in our thoughts ends with our point of view or basis being right.  I think it was said best by  Peter Abelard

The key to wisdom is this – constant and frequent questioning, for by doubting we are led to question and by questioning we arrive at the truth.

Never be afraid to stop and back the truck up question everything to include yourself
