Did you miss me?

Posted: June 30, 2014 in Uncategorized

Friday I was a little busy and didn’t make time to post to this blog. I should have but I didn’t. I apologize to my one fan. Sorry about that.

Have you ever heard of the Flash Crash?  It happened in 2010, it only lasted for minutes but it was the second biggest point swing in the history. A lot of money was lost but it was gained back no harm no foul right?

It really is an interesting story. When you get the chance you should follow the link and read about the crash. Log story short, it seems that many of the companies that do the high frequency trading in the stock market, closed up their computer terminals and did not make any trades. As soon as the trades started back up the downward spiral stopped.

Now there are many theories as to why and how the whole thing happened what I find most interesting is that the fact that some people did not do their jobs made it hard on everyone else.

So whatever it is you do every day or week or month try hard not to forget who benefits from it. If you take the time and investigate you may find that you are part of an intricate system and the lack of your work can cause some serious swings

There was this amazing story carried by multiple news networks the other day. It seems that Bryant Collins, a mechanic was driving down a GA highway and saw a 15 month old baby crawling on the shoulder.  Mr. Collins pulled over, picked up the baby and called the authorities. He waited there on the highway with the baby for two hours until authorities arrived and the baby was reunited with her mother.

Besides the actions in the story itself, what makes this so amazing, is the back story for Mr. Collins. Mr. Collins had served 10 years in prison for drug charges. He was released from prison and began working as a auto mechanic in the Atlanta area. It can easy to be skeptical and sometimes cynical when it comes to a persons rehabilitation and while I have no idea what Mr. Collins does when he is not at work I do know that what he did the other day on the highway saved a life and showed compassion and concern for his fellow man.

“It made me feel good that I could be in society and I could do good,” he said. “Just as you can do bad, you can do good.”   — Bryant Collins

Isn’t that important? Doing good in our society. We may not see a baby on the road while driving into work today or home from work today, but I can almost guarantee we will get the opportunity to do good and I hope we are not to focused to miss it, and then not so apathetic that we do not take the opportunity.

Today’s post title is brought to us by William Shakespeare. Thanks Bill that is exactly what we needed. I am not sure who you are or what you are doing but a safe bet is whatever you are doing know will not be what you will be doing later, that is a safe bet, because, everything changes.

Situations change at home, work places we volunteer and interact and the change can seem good and sometimes bad but perspective makes a huge difference. If we view the changes in a negative light we will be more apt to make poor decisions and suffer from depression and frustration. If we are to optimistic and lack a pragmatic view we can risk not seeing the whole situation and something unseen can cause some issues. So how do we do it?

I like to call it pragmatic optimism or goal oriented thinking. When faced with change and going through assessing your actions. Ask yourself some questions.

Why am I doing this?

It can be easy to lose focus of why we are doing something. When this happens you loose sight of your end game and can get caught up in drama and the rat race  of the day to day situation.  We should do our best to remember what we want from every situation we are in. If you do not know what you want sometimes it helps to write it down and work it out you may find you merely want to work for 30 years and retire and that is fine.

What has to be done to get what I want?

So you know what you want now what has to happen. If you wish to retire in 30 years how much money will you need to have in your 401 k? If you want to own your own business how much money will you need to have in your savings account?
Once you know what you want from your situation and how to get it, it can help if you make a to do list.

Finally how will your life changes effect your to do list?

The to do list should be in pencil because life changes and you have to be flexible. Do not abandon your goals but realize that “all roads lead to Rome”. Today must be The William Shakespeare quote day.  William is right though, there are many methods for success and one is not better than the other. They are merely different.  Just like change being neither good nor bad it simply is.

I know that the post title for this post sounds silly. When I read it and say it out loud it seems even foolish, because it is so evident yet it is not employed. Let me explain quickly…

I was listening to the radio the other day and there was a show on dealing with the subject of women in hollywood and the role changes. More women as protagonists. I think this is a wonderful trend myself. Women are amazing creatures. I was taught by and still am a wonderful women in my mother and even after I left the house I have had the wonderful opportunity to meet strong independent women who have taught me so much about life.  I hear the radio host and pundits speak to how important it is for women to be leaders and like I said earlier I agree but and there is always a but, I don’t think women should have more or less for leading roles because we are all people.

I think that good actors male or female should get more leading roles. I think good characters should be written as part of good stories and whoever is the lead role should be accepted wether they are male or female because, we are all people. no matter what our sex, race or religion we are all people and we all deserve to be respected and we can all do and have done some incredible and amazing things.

To deny someone anything based merely on there sex race religion is foolish and will harm you more than it harms the one you are disenfranchising. Ultimately any type of bigotry through denying someone will harm all of us.

We did it!!

This past Saturday,  me, my girlfriend a friend from work and a neighbor entered and ran the 2014 JCB Mud Run.  The run is a 5.5 mile obstacle course full of mud, hills, ponds all kinds of fun stuff! We did it too, the four of us ran the run Saturday morning and had a blast.

I know five miles is not exactly a marathon or a half marathon but it is still an accomplishment. The biggest accomplishment was not quitting. That is why I think I enjoy running. It is tough and can be hot an tiring but when you complete the run you know have accomplished something.

The feeling of accomplishment becomes confidence and experience, then with confidence and experience you get better at whatever it is you are doing and enjoy it more.

“Experience tells you what to do; confidence allows you to do it.”
 Stan Smith quote

So whatever it is you are doing get started and then, finish. You will feel so good and the next task will seem smaller.

Just the other day I was listening to a radio interview. The man being interviewed was David Zweig. He was being interviewed because he just completed a book, titled “Invisibles“, now in an effort at full disclosure I have to admit, I have not read this book yet. I would like to read it but I just started reading a new book two days ago so we will see.

The book is about the power of anonymous work and the people who do this work.  I think I am going to read the book the interview and the website promoting the book has me sold on it already. During his interview David mentions how he interviewed some “invincible” who were the best at what they did and had done what they did for ages. He also mentions how he looks for a common thread with these people and finds one. What is that thread?

It seems that invisible s or, men and women who do not look for recognition or appreciation from others, take great pride and appreciate the work itself. So that is the secret!

“I can’t understand it I am good at my job. I get things done, but I feel over looked and under paid. I would just like some gratitude from my boss and others every once and a while.”

We can fall into this trap of looking for gratitude approval and ultimately validation from others. The majority cannot be wrong and if the majority of people agree with you than you have to be right and you feel better about your self.

Two things about this. One the majority of people is usually wrong. I challenge you. Show me one instance current or historically where the majority was right and I can show you two where the majority was wrong.

“The fact that an opinion has been widely held is no evidence whatever that it is not utterly absurd; indeed in view of the silliness of the majority of mankind, a widely spread belief is more likely to be foolish than sensible.”
― Bertrand Russell

“Wrong does not cease to be wrong because the majority share in it.”
― Leo Tolstoy

“Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect.”
― Mark Twain

What makes something right or valid is not intrinsic in its acceptance.

Second is that the good feeling you get from gratitude, approval and acceptance of others is fleeting. You will be looking for it again and again and according to David you usually spend more effort in promoting yourself than doing your job.

So what is one to do? Well get a new job. Ahh, easier said than done, am I right? Now I am a firm believer in the power of education and perhaps it is time to educate yourself. A new perspective can take shape when you see where your job fits into the grand scheme of things with the corporate beast you are slave too.

invisiblesbook

Figure out why you do your job and how it affects the company the culture and the word and you will find something greater than the sense of validation through recognition you will find joy in your work.

My girlfriend told me a story about a man who got a job delivering packages at the airport. He worked for two days delivering packages. He asked no questions but his mom did and he had no answers. He went back to work with the questions, he inadvertently asked an executive at the company his moms questions. The executive was impressed with his desire to learn and the man is now an executive. See education and moms are powerful forces.

So first figure out what it is and why you are doing what you do at work. Then do the best you can at it. If you still feel like you need the validation of others well then yeah you really may need a career change, but that is like a whole other blog post and it is Friday so we will talk again

The day you do something or the day you say you will do something and do the same thing that you have always done? Well what is it?

See there are some different types of energy.  In physics we learn that there is potential energy and kinetic energy. Kinetic energy is the energy an object posses due to it’s energy and potential energy is the stored energy of an object.

There are differences between kinetic energy and potential energy. One type of energy is not better than the other they are simply different. One major difference between kinetic and potential energy is that, kinetic energy can be transferred from one object to another. Potential energy cannot.

Now, switching to a more philosophical view here (because that is what I do on this blog), I wonder, if we were to classify our whole beings and the energy we exert into the two types, could we find some similarities? I say yes.

download (1)

Think about it for a minute. Potential energy, would be an idea we have. This idea can be anything, a new gadget to make life better, a novel anything. Until we act this idea can be looked at as potential energy. Now when we start taking action for our idea we began to experience kinetic energy and sometimes when other people are receptive the energy transfers and we get support and the energy grows.

So the other difference between potential energy and kinetic energy is that potential energy cannot influence the object that possess it. Only kinetic energy can.  This is the same for us. Until you act on an idea you have nothing will happen. The last statement sounds foolish, but we all fall into this trap. We expect good things to happen to us but fail to realize this…

“It is not in the stars to hold our destiny but in ourselves.”
― William Shakespeare

So today should be the day! Don’t just think do!!
