You are what you eat and..

Do and say. What makes a man or a woman a man? How do we define a man or a woman’s character? I just read an article that had 14 ways to manipulate your mind for success and it basically said that we are defined by our actions and thoughts.  So if you want to be better just be better. That was the gist of the article. Now, just because I gave you the summary does not mean you should not read the article because it is really good. I liked it a lot, so much that, I decided to comment about it in this post.

Just act better seems easy enough right? I can do that. I can be less apathetic more empathetic I can work harder and read more and exercise more and eat better. I don’t know about you but I am getting exhausted just writing out all the things I can and should be doing better at.  The bottom line is we can all improve and we should all improve. But how?

First step to self improvement is the realization that you are not perfect.  Knowing that we are not perfect helps because we realize we can do things better and that while we are trying to help and do things better we will make mistakes. Learn from your mistakes and move on because you are not perfect do not dwell on them but do your best to get the damage done by your mistakes fixed.

You and I are not perfect. It’s okay to correct each other but lets not criticize one another. — Anonymous

Second step to self improvement is to love everyone, including yourself. I almost put this as the first step but see we have to realize that we and others and everyone are not perfect. No one is before we can love ourselves and others. loving yourself and others will cause you to become empathetic and in turn cause you to care for the needy.  You will find yourself donating time and money and while when your donations are accepted in an ungrateful way, as can often happen, if you remember that, we are all imperfect. You will be less discouraged and continue to act compassionately. love is a powerful force and when exercised can change a man or a woman,  but it takes time and patience.   So show love and be love for yourself and others that is step two.

“I hog the covers, and my second toe is longer than my big one. My hair has its own zip code…You don’t love someone because they’re perfect…You love them in spite of the fact that they’re not.”
― Jodi PicoultMy Sister’s Keeper

Final step on our road to self improvement is the hardest one. Get up and get going. Nike had a wonderful ad campaign. I loved it. When the campaign started I was of course in middle school so that made a difference.  The ad stated “just do it!” Man I loved that campaign!  It was so cool. We talk a lot about doing things tomorrow or later but how much do we really do?
