It’s a book…

Let me see how do I begin? Let’s take a step back. In 2006 my oldest son Kyle was, 7 years old. I was driving through our small town with 7 year old Kyle in the back seat when while passing the local movie theater Kyle asked about the protestors in front of the movie theater. “What are those people doing dad?” I looked to the parking lot and saw grown men and women holding signs in protest of the movie, “The DaVinci Code.” Let me make this early disclaimer, I am a big fan of Dan Brown ( author of Tge DaVinci code). I let 7 year old Kyle now that those people were getting sun burned. Funny right, on a more serious note I did later let Kyle know that the people in front of the movie theater were protesting. I conducted a life lesson.
Just recently online I have seen and read posts about, people’s ire over the movie and book “50 Shades of Grey.” I have not read the book or watched the movie but as far as I can tell the book and movie are a love story. The protagonists engage in some s and m type of sexual exploits. I am really not all that clear on the book or movie I just know that, it is and was wildly popular. The popularity of he book and movie are of no concern to me. You will not see me get online and rail against it because, I know what the word story means. I understand that narratives do have power but only the power given to them through the reader of the narrative.
See no need to protest a performance, especially one that you are not forced to read or watch. I think it is telling that the first amendment to the United States constitution is the freedom of speech. Who am I to decide what speech should be protected.
Keep in mind hat I also understand hat people who rail against art are not trying to hinder free speech. They are simply demonstrating their disdain with a story or art work. I have to ask the critics one thing though, why? This is the thing I fail to understand about critics. Why criticize art that you do not watch or read? Why not simply live and let live?
I will now leave you with the beautiful and immortal words from sir Paul

“When you were young and your heart was an open book
You used to say live and let live
(you know you did, you know you did you know you did)
But if this ever-changing world in which we’re living
Makes you give in and cry

Say live and let die
Live and let die
Live and let die
Live and let die

What does it matter to ya
When you got a job to do
You gotta do it well
You gotta give the other fellow hell

When you were young and your heart was an open book
You used to say life and let live
(you know you did, you know you did you know you did)
But if this ever-changing world in which we’re living
Makes you give in and cry.

Say live and let die
Live and let die
Live and let die (let it die)
Live and let die”
