Is it possible?

Posted: March 31, 2015 in Uncategorized

I am a fan of playing chess. I am also a fan of winning at chess. I wish I could say that I win as often as I play, but I cannot. I lose more games than I win but I like to think I learn. I am beginning to be able to spot certain traps and I am starting to understand which pieces should be played in the middle of the board and which ones can be played on the flanks.

Sometimes in chess it can be easy to get narrow minded and stick with one plan. I find myself doing this more often than naught. I will plan on creating a mate combination with my rook and queen and will disregard all other options and I usually loose one of the pieces. I am trying to work on being more flexible with chess and see all the possibilities out there on every move.

Chess is played on a board with 64 squares and each player starts with 16 pieces. With this finite amount of squares and pieces there are; 400 different possible positions after one move each. There are 72,084 different possible positions after two moves each. There are over 9 million different possible positions after three moves each.

So it is very important to be flexible when playing chess as it is in life at work or home when facing problems. See life is full of many more possibilities.  You just have to be flexible.

This morning while I was getting dressed for work the Andrew Sisters saronaded me. They were singing “The Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy from Company B” song. I love this song, it has a great beat, melody and tells a really good story.

See a horn blower, who was super cool and liked to jam, was drafted in the army.  While in the Army the horn blower, was sad and couldn’t jam. His captain realized that the boy was down and needed his band, so he hooked him up and now.. he is busy getting down and cheering up the whole Army company.

Depending on where and when you are in your career you will be, have been or are in some type of leadership position. As a leader you will need to rely on the efforts of your subordinates. People are amazing animals and all have different psyches and need different things. I would encourage you to learn as much as you can about your subordinates. After learning about your subordinates you will be able to use this knowledge to help them help you and others. You will know what makes them tick and boogie! Then you can give them a band, a fruit basket whatever it takes.Maybe they will write songs about your subordinates. I bet no matter how good the song is it will not hold a candle to “The Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy from Company B”. Don’t believe me watch and listen to the video for yourself. Happy Friday everyone!

How bad do you want it?

Posted: March 26, 2015 in Uncategorized

What are you doing right now? Why are you doing it? What is the goal? How bad do you want it? What is in your way? You can do whatever it is that you are trying to do even if others haven’t done it. There are always the pioneers and innovators. The biggest thing has is and always will be motivation.

Do yourself a favor, right now imagine you have succeeded. Are you there? Is it sweet? You want this right? How bad do you want this? Don’t tell me how bad you want it, show me with your actions. The work you put in today tomorrow and everyday until you succeeded. Even the steps that seem backwards are necessary and a step on your way to the goal.

So don’t show me how bad you want this, show everyone else and show yourself. You may realize that this is something you don’t really want in that case move on and find a new goal but if you really want this, and it is good and pure than never quit and be like someone from Missouri. Yes Missouri is the “show me state”.

Show me and yourself.

Zig Ziglar, an amazing motivational speaker and great businessman, was the provider of today’s, quote of the day. Today’s quote made me feel great! I feel great because I have been accused of ineptitude. Was or am i not apt? The answer doesn’t matter. Why doesn’t it matter? Not because Zig said so but, because I am a learner a worker and I do my best to be a good person. That is more important than aptitude and  ability. It seems to me that the beautiful thing about aptitude and ability is this, you can move the needle. Ability and aptitude are dynamic, no question, the question is… Are you willing to move it? This movement will take work and time but you can do it!

That time again… I guess

There isn’t really an election going on right now locally or on the federal level and yet it feels like it. For me at least, it feels like it. I feel like election season is here because of the recent focus on politics and politicians. Now, yes I realize there are elections in other countries and I also realize that globalization has created a world in which everyone is connected. Maybe it is this interconnected state that makes it seem as if the election season never ends.

I am not a big fan of politics, I know it is not he business of caring for the public, but it feels ripe for corruption. I think my biggest complaint in politics is that the corruption.   It is my reason for my dislike that I must not become disillusioned or disconnected from politics.

We are not weak if we make a proper use of those means which the God of Nature has placed in our power… the battle, sir, is not to the strong alone it is to the vigilant, the active, the brave.

Patrick Henry

I know that, the system is broken and the men and woman are malevolent and corrupt and yet this is the system and the only way to be viligant is to be involved. Vote, stuff envelopes volunteer make your public better. That is how I am going to face this new political season.

I will leave you with a long but magnificent poem

Let America Be America Again

Langston Hughes1902 – 1967

Let America be America again.
Let it be the dream it used to be.
Let it be the pioneer on the plain
Seeking a home where he himself is free.

(America never was America to me.)

Let America be the dream the dreamers dreamed—
Let it be that great strong land of love
Where never kings connive nor tyrants scheme
That any man be crushed by one above.

(It never was America to me.)

O, let my land be a land where Liberty
Is crowned with no false patriotic wreath,
But opportunity is real, and life is free,
Equality is in the air we breathe.

(There's never been equality for me,
Nor freedom in this "homeland of the free.")

Say, who are you that mumbles in the dark?
And who are you that draws your veil across the stars?

I am the poor white, fooled and pushed apart,
I am the Negro bearing slavery's scars.
I am the red man driven from the land,
I am the immigrant clutching the hope I seek—
And finding only the same old stupid plan
Of dog eat dog, of mighty crush the weak.

I am the young man, full of strength and hope,
Tangled in that ancient endless chain
Of profit, power, gain, of grab the land!
Of grab the gold! Of grab the ways of satisfying need!
Of work the men! Of take the pay!
Of owning everything for one's own greed!

I am the farmer, bondsman to the soil.
I am the worker sold to the machine.
I am the Negro, servant to you all.
I am the people, humble, hungry, mean—
Hungry yet today despite the dream.
Beaten yet today—O, Pioneers!
I am the man who never got ahead,
The poorest worker bartered through the years.

Yet I'm the one who dreamt our basic dream
In the Old World while still a serf of kings,
Who dreamt a dream so strong, so brave, so true,
That even yet its mighty daring sings
In every brick and stone, in every furrow turned
That's made America the land it has become.
O, I'm the man who sailed those early seas
In search of what I meant to be my home—
For I'm the one who left dark Ireland's shore,
And Poland's plain, and England's grassy lea,
And torn from Black Africa's strand I came
To build a "homeland of the free."

The free?

Who said the free? Not me?
Surely not me? The millions on relief today?
The millions shot down when we strike?
The millions who have nothing for our pay?
For all the dreams we've dreamed
And all the songs we've sung
And all the hopes we've held
And all the flags we've hung,
The millions who have nothing for our pay—
Except the dream that's almost dead today.

O, let America be America again—
The land that never has been yet—
And yet must be—the land where every man is free.
The land that's mine—the poor man's, Indian's, Negro's, ME—
Who made America,
Whose sweat and blood, whose faith and pain,
Whose hand at the foundry, whose plow in the rain,
Must bring back our mighty dream again.

Sure, call me any ugly name you choose—
The steel of freedom does not stain.
From those who live like leeches on the people's lives,
We must take back our land again,

O, yes,
I say it plain,
America never was America to me,
And yet I swear this oath—
America will be!

Out of the rack and ruin of our gangster death,
The rape and rot of graft, and stealth, and lies,
We, the people, must redeem
The land, the mines, the plants, the rivers.
The mountains and the endless plain—
All, all the stretch of these great green states—
And make America again!

The spaceship

The moons of Jupiter are numerous, large and may have life on them! This is some incredible news that NASA has discovered by observation of the celestial bodies. The observation is accomplished through satellites in Jupiters orbit. Jupiter is about 601 million miles away from Earth (this is an about distance, because it really depends on what time of the Earth year you take the measurement). That is far! Really really far. How did the satellite get to Jupiter? Lots of fuel? Well there was a lot of fuel burned but a bigger reason that the satellite was able to reach Jupiter was because its flight path enabled it to be use gravitational assist from planets. Gravitational asissts are complicated the satellite gets energy from the gravity of another body in space. Some people call using gravitational assist sling shot. That is a great description.

This process, no matter what it is called is possible to apply, because of Noethers Theorem. Today is Emmy Noethers 133rd birthday. It was this brilliant mathematicians work that will assist in finding life on distant planets and travel to said planets.

Emmy did not live to see her work applied for space travel (she died at 53) but her work was paramount to the success of the space program. You may be working on something that seems worthless, I encourage you today to think big. Beyond Earth, and your office. Think throughout time, past you and your children’s existence in my this plane. Who knows, what seems fruitless could become paramount. What you working on, might power the next spaceship. Happy birthday Emmy and thanks

There are some amazing images

The citizenship award

Posted: March 19, 2015 in Uncategorized

When I was young, my sisters were younger, as I grow older my sisters stay younger than I am, see the thing is my sisters are younger than I am. My sister Bernadette was a few years younger than me and when Bernadette was in elementary school I was in middle school. I remember an award that Bernadette came home with one day. It was a citizenship award. I have to admit that, I was jealous of the award. To this day when I hear or see the word, citizenship, I imagine Captain America defending our nation and world from Nazis. I really wanted Bernadettes award. I have always felt a deep sense of pride and patriotism when it comes to my country of birth. But I have not always been clear on how I could show my pride. I joined the US Army right after I got out of high school and I loved the experience. This did not make me a good citizen though. I thought it would but I have learned that a good citizen is made by someone who helps other people with compassion, dignity and respect. There are these signs above door that say, “Everyone brings Joy to this house, some when they enter others when they leave.” A good citizen is one who brings joy when he enters, or she. Why do you bring joy? Well because, you help others in compassion, dignity, love and respect. We do not need to be Captain America to be a good citizen we just need to be good.
