Dead as a What?

A doornail. I have been intrigued by, the North American vernacular ever since I learned to talk. I have been especially interested in the way the language has been created. North Americans have learned, borrowed and stolen to create the colorful language and culture that we as US citizens use every day. Our language like our culture is a melting pot that usually represents the best of all parts of the world. See my hope is that the people and language would embrace every culture and take the best of it. I hear people in this election campaign say things like assimilate and I challenge them with, “assimilate to what?”  What makes someone an American? Interesting question right? I think it is respect for liberty life and freedom and really nothing else. You don’t need to “speak English” as some shout at men and women who have English as a second or third language. Now I don’t think your language or skin color makes you American. The United States of America is at it’s heart an idea not a language.
