Not that important

On my way into work this morning I was listening to a 90’s playlist and Bette Middler was belting out the beauty titles “From a distance”.  Two things occurred to me then, 1. I always assumed that, Gloria Estefan sang that song in the nineties and 2. this was an amazing song.
I remember the first time I heard this song. My mom was driving in the car and she mentioned that it was a beautiful song but it wasn’t true. The song, for those who haven’t heard it, basically explains how god sees the world from a distance and everything looks good from a distance, no war, no fire only peace and love. My mom mentioned how as Baptists we believe that god is present and accessible so god sees and knows all; good, bad and ugly. I totally agree with this religious ideal  but I also believe that god forgives and accepts; good, bad or ugly and that well I acknowledge I maybe falling into the trap of awarding the lyrcist of a pop song with too much credit, maybe she was writing about a distance as a metaphor a way to understand how god is able to forgive despite all our failings or maybe the words just rhymed in the end it is really not that important. It is just a really pretty song to sing along to.
