Put on your mask first

I am not a big fan of traveling my plane, however I am less a fan of sitting in a car, bus or boat for extended periods of time, so I have ridden on and continue to ride on commercial flights to do work and see family. A common step in every commercial flight is the safety briefing before each flight. The first flight I took as a child, involved a safety briefing in which the stewardess spoke to the plane and the other stewardess would mimic the words with exaggerated motions. Now many planes play a video and you watch the exaggerated motions of the stewardess. There is one statement that really resonates with me and it is; “In the event of a change in cabin pressure, you put your oxygen mask on first, pulling the cord, and then you helped others in your party who needed your assistance.”

It is important to notice that, we should put our mask on first before helping others. There was a time in my life when I would give away my last dollar and a good friend of mine mentioned that, if I didn’t take care of myself I would be unable to care for myself. This concept was a little difficult to grasp but as soon as I did it made a world of difference.

I used to love listing to the comedian Louie Anderson. Louie would end almost every show with the words, “Take care of yourself and others.” That order matters, we cannot help anyone if we cannot help ourselves.

So take care of yourself my friend.
