Be the change

For me president Obamas, farewell address was incredibly moving. The man has always been a great orator, but his farewell address really knocked the ball out of the park. Normally a presidents farewell address is full of regrets and warnings but this one, was full of hope, promise and change. Besides the precedent set, I would expect no less from the man who, ran a campaign on change and managed an organization that changed the country and the world.

The president described the accomplishments made by the country through his administration over the last 8 years.

A nuclear free Iran

Affordable health care

Largest Job growth in the history of the nation

(those are just the top accomplishments)

After describing the accomplishments he went on to explain how citizens can work through the system for the system. He encourages action for those who are disappointed  with the current leadership.

“Ultimately, that’s what our democracy demands. It needs you. Not just when there’s an election, not just when your own narrow interest is at stake, but over the full span of a lifetime. If you’re tired of arguing with strangers on the internet, try to talk with one in real life. If something needs fixing, lace up your shoes and do some organizing. If you’re disappointed by your elected officials, grab a clipboard, get some signatures, and run for office yourself. Show up. Dive in. Persevere.” – Barack Obama

The United States can seem to be perpetual in nature, however the democracy and republic is built on and is maintained through the actions of its citizens. I implore you today to take the words of president Obama to heart and “be the change”. Be kind to yourself and your fellow Americans and humans. We will keep democracy alive with our actions and the way we treat each other or we will kill democracy (maybe not kill, but stifle and slowly suffocate it).

The United States is an idea and a tenuous one but it is far more powerful than it is tenuous, but only if we try and be kind to each other.
