So the other day I was lucky I got to go to a concert with two really cool people. I like music, and I love live music,  so this was a treat for  me. The singer was Trace Adkins and he put on a show. One song that really hit home and I swear there wasn’t a dry eye in the theater was “You’re gonna miss this”.

“She was staring out that window, of that SUV
Complaining, saying I can’t wait to turn 18
She said I’ll make my own money, and I’ll make my own rules
Mamma put the car in park out there in front of the school
Then she kissed her head and said I was just like you

[Chorus]
You’re gonna miss this
You’re gonna want this back
You’re gonna wish these days hadn’t gone by so fast
These Are Some Good Times
So take a good look around
You may not know it now
But you’re gonna miss this

Before she knows it she’s a brand new bride
In a one-bedroom apartment, and her daddy stops by
He tells her It’s a nice place
She says It’ll do for now
Starts talking about babies and buying a house
Daddy shakes his head and says Baby, just slow down

[Chorus]
You’re gonna miss this
You’re gonna want this back
You’re gonna wish these days hadn’t gone by so fast
These Are Some Good Times
So take a good look around
You may not know it now
But you’re gonna miss this

Five years later there’s a plumber workin’ on the water heater
Dog’s barkin’, phone’s ringin’
One kid’s cryin’, one kid’s screamin’
She keeps apologizin’
He says They don’t bother me.
I’ve got 2 babies of my own.
One’s 36, one’s 23.
Huh, it’s hard to believe, but …

[Chorus]
You’re gonna miss this
You’re gonna want this back
You’re gonna wish these days hadn’t gone by so fast
These Are Some Good Times
So take a good look around
You may not know it now
But you’re gonna miss this
You’re gonna miss this
Yeah, you’re gonna miss this”

The bad news is that, this singer songwriter is right. When I was 14 I went camping at a lake one summer. I swam out for what seemed forever and swam to a floating dock I pulled myself up onto the dock and laid in the sun. I felt the heat from the sun untie the knots in my stomach and loosen my tight muscles. That feeling I had is gone and I miss it. 14 years ago, I went to Kuwait as a solider. It was late at night on the Iraq border and I was on the satellite phone listening to my ex-wife, her doctor and my oldest son. The way I felt at that moment was truly indescribable. I miss that.

So that’s the bad news here is the good news. Every day with my family and friends I am part of new moments that I will miss. I like to sometimes picture life as this big ol quilt. Each moment is another patch stitched and held together by that mystical force called love. After hearing that song I got to thinking that sometimes it is important to sometimes step back and reflect
