“Let me tell you the secret that has led me to my goals: my strength lies solely in my tenacity.”
Louis Pasteur

Louis Pasteur, a French chemist who has probably saved the lives of millions of people through pasteurization,  was not a stranger to adversity. Pasteur was born into a poor family and did not excel at school. Pasteur failed, when trying to get his BSc degree in mathematics.  The failure did not stop Pasteur a year later he graduated with a poor degree in chemistry. After all of this Louis Pasteur went on to become a professor and father of five children. Only two of his five children survived to adulthood. Three died of Typhoid, in spite of this terrible tragedy Louis Pasteur worked harder to find cures for diseases and he was successful. Thanks to his research the medical world gained an understanding for germs and immunizations.   When many other men and women would have quit Louis Pasteur dug in his heels and fought back! Thank god he did too!

In 1992 Walt Disney founded Laugh-O-Gram Studios in Missouri. Laugh-O-Gram A year laughter Walt’s company went Bankrupt.  Walt sold his only possession, a motion picture camera, moved to Hollywood and kept on pursuing his dream.  In 2012 the DIsney company had over 73 billion dollars in assets!  The word Disney is almost worldwide, synonymous with a fun family time. Athletes who reach the pinnacle of their career  and win championships are asked what they are doing now and answer with, “I am going to Disney World.” Disney World is the Disney companies resort theme park. I would say that Walt was and is a winner. “It is good to have a failure while you are young because it teaches you so much.

For one thing it makes you aware that such a thing can happen to anybody,
And once you’ve lived through the worst,
You’re never quite as vulnerable afterwards.”
-Walt Disney
Both Walt Disney and Louis Pasteur have known failure and success. Many, many more individuals have also known failure and success. The stories are endless but all have one common thread, a tenacious will desire that compels action and kinetic energy from someone.  I am not sure how well you are doing or what you are doing but I am pretty sure you have and will fail, the secret is that if you do not stop, you have not failed. As long as you are leaning forward and learning you are a success.

He was once a bookkeeper

I do not think there is any other quality so essential to success of any kind as the quality of perseverance. It overcomes almost everything, even nature.
-John D. Rockefeller

170px-John-D-Rockefeller-sen

Well there you have it. If any man would know what it takes to be successful I think John D. Rockefeller would be the one.  John Rockefeller truly started at the bottom and worked his way to the top.  Rockefeller was the first American worth more than a billion dollars and when adjusting for inflation, Rockefeller was the richest person in history.

There is a paradigm in the United States. Go to college get a good job and be successful.  John Rockefeller broke this paradigm. At 16 he started working as a bookkeeper. By age 20 he started selling food with a business partner. He began making money then and never stopped.

Everyone wants to succeed, go to any bookstore and look through the self help section and it will be evident. John Rockefeller wanted to live to 100 and earn 100,000 dollars. He was successful with one of those goals.

I am not sure what your goals are. You may want a big family or a lot of money, a nice house or car. You may want to cure cancer or aids or develop the perpetual motion machine. No matter what your goals are I can guarantee that without effort on your part you will never reach your goal.

Potential energy accomplishes nothing it is kinetic energy that makes things happen and brings success. If you feel like your goals are not attainable take heart as long as you are moving and working you are getting closer. You may be right there “knocking on the door” behind which lies the fruition of your goals.

Do not give up! I remember reading or maybe being told about Florence Chadwick. She quit only a mile from the shore when she attempted to swim the English Channel. She tried again and was successful. She had mentioned that if she could have seen the shore when she quit she may not have quit.  She was eventually successful and a record breaker.

If I can give any advice today it would be to work hard and never ever give up.

The hustle

Things may come to those who wait, but only what’s left behind by those that hustle. — Abraham Lincoln

If it was good enough for Lincoln it is good enough for me.  I coached a few little league teams and plan on coaching a few more. Besides team work another word that is tossed around and drilled into the kids heads is hustle. Hustle:

1.
to proceed or work rapidly or energetically: to hustle aboutputting a house in order.
2.

to push or force one’s way; jostle or shove.
3.

to be aggressive, especially in business or other financialdealings.
“Every morning in Africa, a Gazelle wakes up. It knows it must run faster than the fastest lion or it will be killed. Every morning a Lion wakes up. It knows it must outrun the slowest Gazelle or it will starve to death. It doesn’t matter whether you are a Lion or a Gazelle… when the sun comes up, you’d better be running.”

We like to believe that we man as a species are better than the animals, and maybe at times we are but one thing remains true man is an animal. We are an amazing animal who as a species has and continues to accomplish much, but we are animal. We employ abstract reasoning and have self consciousnesses but man is an animal member of planet earth and as such he has to stay mobile if he wishes to survive.

It is easy to become stagnate and complacent. We can go to work come home eat a great meal and then veg out in front of the tv or with a good book. We are not moving and helping ourselves and others we are like the Gazelle who stops to take a drink or a breath it is ok as long as they are vigilant to drink and eat and sleep.  There is nothing wrong with some recreation or leisure time as long as it is in moderation as long as we life life through applying some form of temperance we should expect to keep from being eaten and to be feed. But the slothful life’s reward is one of destruction and starvation.
“Sloth makes all things difficult, but industry all easy; and he that riseth late must trot all day, and shall scarce overtake his business at night; while laziness travels so slowly, that poverty soon overtakes him.”
― Benjamin Franklin

“Be social: Interacting with others supports cognitive health by exercising diverse areas of the brain.

Every time I turn around I cannot help but see or read something that points to the benefits that come from helping and working with other people. I guess that ― Mahatma Gandhi had the right idea when he said: “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” Our lives are going to get bumpy and messy and tough that is just the way it is. We can plan for everything and something will still come up and catch us off guard. When this happens we feel helpless and out of control. What can we do how can we feel better? Even after we do gain back control and weather the “storm” we feel empty sometimes and wonder is this what life is all about? Some look to religion and others get lost in hobbies habits or work. I challenge you today to make and effort to help others.

Trust me with the tumultuous nature of life there will be no lack of people to help. Not everyone will want help and that is fine too. But you will get the opportunity to help today, and I say do it! Helping others will make you smarter more sympathetic and hello, it is helping. So it will make all of us together better.

This morning I come across an interesting article while surfing the web and drinking coffee. The article is titled ten things you can do to make you happier. The article is really great and if you have the chance you should read it. The article goes into the science behind why these things make you happy. Happiness really is a choice and my doing these ten simple things we can choose to be happy.

1. Exercise more

2. Sleep more

3. Move closer to work

4. Spend times with Family

5. Go outside

6. Help others

7. Practice Smiling

8. Plan a trip

9. Meditate

10. Practice Gratitude

I am not sure about you but I was raised by a mom who suggested all these things to me as a child and even now when I call as an adult. Cut away to a call between my mother and myself…

mom: So good to hear from you. How are you?

me: I am ok…

mom: oh are you taking care of yourself I just finished Pilates you would like that (exercise more).

me: I run every day mom. I never really got into Pilates

mom: ok that’s good I never really liked running.  Are you getting enough sleep (sleep more)? Have you spoke with your sisters lately (time with family)?

me: I am sleeping fine. I spoke with Ashley last week. It is hard to get a hold of them.

mom: Oh she is going on vacation. Are you taking a vacation (plan a trip)? Are you still volunteering at church (help others)? Are you still going to church (meditate)?

me: yes to all it is all going ok too.

mom: well that is great it is so good to hear from you. Thanks for calling (gratitude)?

The call goes on but, you have suffered enough. I really enjoy my calls with my mom and most do not include that many questions. She does not make it a habit to nag me, but she does offer this type of advice. Mom is grown up and she loves me and so does your mom or mother figure. She has a desire to see you be happy and it seems for the most part that she is dead on about how to be happy.

So next time we think we are being mothered, maybe we can practice gratitude, say thank you and follow the sound scientific advice.

“Change your stars and live a better life than I have.” The line is from one of my most favorite movies, A Knight’s Tale. The peasant father who sold the star of the movie to a Lord or knight in the United Kingdom told his son to change his stars.

As early as 25,000 years ago men and women have looked up at the vastness of space and the stars for answers to our past and future. Astrology and Palm reading have been used for predicting the future of humans.  In Japan Palm reading is very popular to this day, so popular that plastic surgeons have offered and for a price  will change your life lines on your palm, surgically.

Will this change our destiny? Not sure how much weight you put into palm reading, or palmistry but this as astrology is an old technique used for seeing mans future.

For me the jury is out on palmistry and astrology. Are the coincidences where the process of events matched the prediction of the stars and the lines of palms merely coincidences or is it fate? I am sure though that men and women have a brain and this brain is a powerful organ that basically controls their body. Our brains control, the nervous system, language, abstract thought, emotions. I really think we should tell people we love them with all our brain as opposed to heart because the brain is it.

When I googled brain, I noticed a link that was a question. The link read if our brain controls our body what controls our brain. I thought for a second and choose not to click the link. Then I thought some more and clicked on the link. It seems the brain is controlled by a delicate balance of everything. So I got to thinking if I can influence my brain through looking at my palms and make my life longer. Than maybe changing my palms through plastic surgery works!

I haven’t made an appointment yet to have my palm life lines changed yet, (and I don’t think they are called lifelines, so I apologize to all the palm readers) but I have ended and began habits I feel will help me life a fuller more happy and longer life so how much different am I than the man having the palm surgery?

Can we change our destinies? I say yes. How? Well that is up to you

Yesterday I saw a flow chart on the internet.

worries

Worry is defined as a state of anxiety or unease. What is more concerning than the definition of the word would be what worry does. “Chronic worrying affects your daily life so much that it interferes with your appetite, lifestyle habits, relationships, sleep, and job performance. Many people who worry excessively are so anxiety-ridden that they seek relief in harmful lifestyle habits such as overeating, cigarette smoking, or using alcohol and drugs.” — http://www.webmd.com

Anxiety is common and nothing to be ashamed of. Depending on what is going on in your life you may be experiencing more or less anxiety, but it helps to get a could perspective on it, through (drum roll please) the flow chart.

What is going on? Can you do something about this?  Yes? Well then no worries.  No? Well then no worries? Almost every major religion deals with worry through surrendering the anxiety to the higher power.

There was a song in 1988 titled “Don’t Worry be Happy” the song was light simple and fun. The song was written and performed by Bobby Mcferrin and despite rumors and urban legend the performer is not the victim of suicide he is alive well and performing.  The song is definitely an act in denial however it does help sometimes, when our worry seems to be so strong to exercise this extreme denial, dial it back a little gain some perspective and see life and situations for what they really are.

I hope that, if you are experiencing worry you have the ability to pull back. If it helps use the flow chart. By stepping back and gaining perspective one cannot help but realize that life is a gift, and not a right. You are given this gift by your parents. Now I realize that many believe the opposite that life is a right, but I ask you this which attitude is better one of self entitlement or a gracious thankful one?
