In the morning before I leave the house for work I enjoy listening to music that gets streamed on my I Pad using the songza app. If you have an I pad and have not yet, do download the songza app from the app store check it out here I absolutely love this app. I also love music but who doesn’t love music. Music is prayer, music is joy, love. “Music expresses that which cannot be put into words and that which cannot remain silent”
― Victor Hugo

So to paint the scene; I am in the bedroom listening to music and Ironing my shirt. The app plays two songs that I like and then one that I love. The song is “Fix Ya” by Cold Play.  For anyone who has not heard this song, it is about a person who is broken. The subject of the song can’t sleep or stop crying and the songs protagonist croons on about how he will fix her or him. So the name is “Fix Ya”.

When you try your best, but you don’t succeed
When you get what you want, but not what you need
When you feel so tired, but you can’t sleep
Stuck in reverse

And the tears come streaming down your face
When you lose something you can’t replace
When you love someone, but it goes to waste
Could it be worse?

Lights will guide you home
And ignite your bones
And I will try to fix you

And high up above or down below
When you’re too in love to let it go
But if you never try you’ll never know
Just what you’re worth

Lights will guide you home
And ignite your bones
And I will try to fix you

Tears stream down your face
When you lose something you cannot replace
Tears stream down your face
And I…

Tears stream down your face
I promise you I will learn from my mistakes
Tears stream down your face
And I…

Lights will guide you home
And ignite your bones
And I will try to fix you

…. See? This is a great song!! What really strikes me yesterday morning about this song is the second line.  “When you get what you want, but not what you need” Has this ever happened to you? Has it ever happened to me?

Wants and needs have been objects of interest to me since a child. My father was an expert on wants and needs. “You want “Air Jordans”, you need tennis shoes. I will make sure that you get what you need.” As a father I find myself explaining wants and needs to my own children and as an adult I see some peers who sometimes seem to get wants and needs mixed up.

When you get the chance, look up Luxury Tax, kind of interesting. It is a tax on goods not deemed essential and that is probably the difference in wants and needs right. A need is essential. A want may or may not be essential. I think about how as I child I wanted those Air Jordans I really did! However I had three sisters so I didn’t get what I wanted I did get what I needed and I had a very happy childhood. It can be tempting to feel as if we will achieve happiness when we get everything we want but, speaking from experience I can say this is not the case and as the crooner puts it in “Fix Ya” when you get what you want but not what you need you may find yourself in a really bad way.

Is the water murky enough for you yet? Maybe another singer can clear it up.

“It’s not having what you want
It’s wanting what you’ve got” –Sheryl Crow “Soak up the Sun”

The idea of wanting what you’ve got and getting wants but not needs makes me also think about the power of being grateful.  Maybe the secret to happiness lies less in outside forces like getting what we want or need and more in perspective? Life is a magnificent gift, we should all do our best to enjoy it and help others enjoy it.

I leave you with the wisdom of an expert on luxury

“Do not spoil what you have by desiring what you have not; remember that what you now have was once among the things you only hoped for.”
― Epicurus
